First visit of the city

Publié le par Jérôme

Let’s start our visit of Krakow by the old city and the main square Rynek Główny, one of the biggest medieval square in Europe. Concentrate of historical momuments, it is definitively the most touristic place in the city. But it remains also a place for local people, with a lot of entertainment events  all over the year.

On the centre is the Sukiennice. Built first in the 14th century, it was for long time used as a market.  Now the galleries are dedicted to wood, textile and amber handcraft.

Directly on the square is the Church St Mary. Very nice Church, one of the highlights is the Veit Stoss retable.

Every hour, you can hear from the Hejnalica, the highest tower of the Church, the sound of trumpet. Played by a member of the city fire safety crew, the melody stops always suddenly. According to the legend, the watchman was stopped by ringing the alert of the Tatar attack as an arrow hurt him directly in his throat.
Another interesting building is the old city hall tower.
